US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.
Check before you buy:
- The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
- You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
- If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
