The Mustang Survival MD3183 T3 is an inflatable PFD with Hydrostatic Inflator Technology, in fluorescent yellow-green. It inflates automatically or manually from a 33 gram CO2 cylinder, and fits chests from 30 to 52 inches. The hydrostatic inflator only fires once it is under at least 4 inches of water, and needs no maintenance for 5 years or until inflated. It carries a strobe light holder, whistle and reflective tape, and is USCG rated Type II recreational and Type V commercial.
Our take
The hydrostatic inflator only fires once it is under at least 4 inches of water, and it needs no maintenance for 5 years or until it has inflated. After any inflation it has to be inspected and re-armed before the next use, so keep that in mind.
From our buying guide
US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.
Check before you buy:
- The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
- You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
- If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
