The MD3183 T3 is an automatic inflatable life jacket from Mustang Survival, finished in ANSI approved high visibility yellow with 64 in² of reflective tape. It gives 35 lb of buoyancy when fully inflated and is USCG approved as a Type II PFD. A hydrostatic inflator with a manual backup fires once the jacket is under at least 4 inches of water. It is for wearers 16 or older, over 80 lbs, with a 30 to 52 inch chest. Re-arm it with kit MA-7214.
Our take
The hydrostatic inflator waits for 4 or more inches of water, so rain, spray and humidity should not set it off, and a manual backup is fitted. The 16 year and 80 lb minimums rule it out for anyone younger or lighter.
From our buying guide
US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.
Check before you buy:
- The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
- You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
- If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
