The Motive is a Type III life jacket from Bluestorm, Coast Guard approved and cut as a vest for kayak and paddle fishing. Sculpted PVC foam provides the flotation and a 3D mesh lining helps with cooling. It has 6 adjustment points, a zippered front entry, 2 storage pockets and multiple attachment points for tools and gear. This one is the Large/XL in Nitro Red.
Our take
Six adjustment points on a Type III foam vest give you room to tailor the fit, and the 3D mesh lining is aimed at keeping the vest cooler against the body. Foam flotation means there is nothing to inflate or rearm.
From our buying guide
US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.
Check before you buy:
- The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
- You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
- If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
