The Mustang Khimera is an over-the-head, dual flotation life jacket that combines foam with an inflatable cell. It carries USCG approval and a Harmonized Level 70 rating. The foam gives 7.5 lbs of buoyancy and the cell adds 13 lbs more when inflated, using a 12 gram CO2 cylinder. Inflation is manual. It fits chests of 30 to 52 inches and wearers of 90 lb (40 kg) or more. A front pocket holds a spare cylinder, which is not included.
Our take
The Khimera has 7.5 lbs of foam buoyancy before anything is pulled, and 13 lbs more once the cell is inflated. Inflation is manual, so the extra lift depends on the wearer or someone else triggering it. Keep a spare cylinder in the front pocket.
From our buying guide
US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.
Check before you buy:
- The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
- You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
- If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
