The Mustang Survival Minimalist Belt Pack is an inflatable PFD worn at the waist on an adjustable strap. It carries USCG approval as a Type V device with Type III performance and gives 33 lb, or 150 N, of buoyancy once inflated. You inflate it by pulling the activation cord, with oral inflation on the left chest as a backup. The pack stays out of the way until you activate it. The maker recommends it for groups or skilled swimmers.
Our take
It only gives its 33 lb (150 N) of buoyancy after the activation cord is pulled, so the wearer has to be able to act. That fits the maker's note that the belt pack is for groups or skilled swimmers.
From our buying guide
US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.
Check before you buy:
- The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
- You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
- If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
