The Mustang Survival MIT 100 Automatic Inflatable PFD (model MD2016 T1) is an inflatable life jacket in orange and black. Its Membrane Inflatable Technology cell is meant to cut weight and give a lighter, more flexible fit, and the shell is 500 denier Cordura. Inflation is automatic, with a manual cord as well, and the buoyancy is 28 lbs / 125 N once inflated. The T1 version adds reflective tape and a safety whistle on the inflation cell, and the 1-fold design is meant to be easy to repack. It carries recreational Type III approval, with a minimum buoyancy rating of 22.5 lbs.
Our take
The inflated cell gives 28 lbs / 125 N of buoyancy, which is rated at 1.5 times a regular foam PFD, and a manual cord sits alongside the automatic inflator. Its commercial approval gives Type III performance only when the jacket is worn.
From our buying guide
US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.
Check before you buy:
- The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
- You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
- If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
