The Bluestorm Stratus 35 is a USCG-approved inflatable life jacket in red. It inflates automatically on immersion, and it can also be inflated by a pull cord or an oral tube. The bladder gives 35 lbs of buoyancy. The waist belt is 2 inches wide and the universal fit covers chests from 30 to 56 inches. A zippered pocket holds small items such as a phone and keys, and the shell and bladder are built for 4-step repacking.
Our take
The 35 lbs of buoyancy comes from a hi-vis bladder that inflates automatically on immersion, with a pull cord and an oral tube as backups, so there are three ways to get it inflated rather than one.
From our buying guide
US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.
Check before you buy:
- The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
- You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
- If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
