The MIT 100 from Mustang Survival is an automatic inflatable PFD with a 500 Denier Cordura outer shell. It inflates on its own when submerged, and a manual cord lets the wearer inflate it without going in the water. Inflated, it gives 28 lb (125 N) of buoyancy. It carries a recreational Type III approval, meeting the 22.5 lb minimum buoyancy rating, and this T1 version adds reflective tape and a safety whistle.
Our take
The 28 lb of buoyancy comes from a cell that fills on its own after water entry, and it is said to self-right most wearers within seconds. The manual cord covers the times you want it inflated before going in. Type III performance only counts when it is worn.
From our buying guide
US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.
Check before you buy:
- The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
- You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
- If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
