The Bluestorm Atmos 40 in Nitro Red is a USCG-approved Type II inflatable life jacket. It inflates automatically on immersion using a replaceable CO2 cylinder, with one cylinder included, or by hand with the pull cord. A back-up oral tube is also fitted. It provides 40 lbs of buoyancy and adjusts to fit chests of 30 to 56 inches. A large zippered pocket sits on the front.
Our take
With 40 lbs of buoyancy and a Type II approval, the Atmos 40 inflates by itself on immersion, and the pull cord and oral tube give two more ways to fill it. It ships with one cylinder, so a spare is worth having for re-arming.
From our buying guide
US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.
Check before you buy:
- The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
- You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
- If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
