The Bluestorm Atmos 40 is a USCG-approved inflatable life jacket with a 40 lb bladder. It inflates automatically on immersion using a replaceable CO2 cylinder, and can also be inflated with a pull cord or an oral tube. Universal sizing fits chests from 30 to 56 inches. It has a neoprene collar to limit chafing and a zippered pocket for a phone, wallet or keys. It is meant for wearers aged 16 and older.
Our take
The 40 lb bladder inflates on immersion, with a pull cord and an oral tube as backups, so there are three ways to get it full. It is meant for wearers 16 and older, so it is not the jacket to put on a younger crew member.
From our buying guide
US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.
Check before you buy:
- The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
- You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
- If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
