The Onyx M-24 Essential is a red, adult universal manual inflatable life jacket made for a 30 to 52 inch chest. It is U.S. Coast Guard approved and certified Type V with Type III performance. The wearer inflates it by pulling the handle, with oral inflation as a backup. A soft neoprene neckline adds comfort. After inflation it can be re-armed with Onyx kit 1351. The maker recommends it for people 16 and older who weigh over 80 lbs.
Our take
Inflation here is manual: the wearer has to pull the handle, with oral inflation as the backup. The maker recommends it for people 16 and older over 80 lbs, so it is an adult jacket, not one to size down for a child.
From our buying guide
US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.
Check before you buy:
- The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
- You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
- If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
