This is Mustang's MJ6214 flotation bomber jacket in size Small, rated USCG Type III. It is cut in a relaxed fit for mobility, with fleece-lined front pockets, a double storm flap and neoprene wrist closures. The body uses closed-cell foam for buoyancy, and the same foam gives in-water insulation to slow the onset of hypothermia after immersion. The fabric is high visibility with reflective tape, and an internal waist belt reduces ride-up. Size Small fits a 34 to 38 inch chest.

Our take

The closed-cell foam gives this jacket both flotation and in-water insulation, which the maker says delays hypothermia after immersion. It is rated USCG Type III, and the neoprene wrist closures are a feature of this version aimed at foul weather. A hood is available separately.

From our buying guide

US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.

Check before you buy:

  • The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
  • You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
  • If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
