This is the XX-Large Mustang MJ6214 flotation jacket, listed as USCG Type III. Closed-cell foam in the body gives it buoyancy and some insulation against cold water, and the cut is relaxed so the arms and shoulders keep their mobility. The front pockets are fleece-lined, and neoprene cuffs close up the wrists against wet weather. A belt inside the waist is there to cut down ride-up, and a storm flap covers the whole front. A hood can be added, but it is not part of this jacket.

Our take

The internal waist belt exists to reduce ride-up, so the closed-cell foam body should stay where it was fitted as you move around the deck. Neoprene wrist closures add some weather protection at the cuffs, but the hood is a separate item.

From our buying guide

US rules count Coast Guard-approved jackets. One approved only to European or ISO standards doesn't meet the US carriage rules, however good it is.

Check before you buy:

  • The approval number is on the label, and the jacket fits you as that label marks.
  • You're getting the US version, since some jackets are sold in two.
  • If it's Level 50, it only counts toward what you must carry when it's worn.
