The Harken 224 is a small, lightweight, free running block with a 22 mm sheave. It has stainless steel side plates and Delrin ball bearings, and takes a 3/16 inch shackle pin. It weighs just 0.5 oz and carries a safe working load of 200 lbs. Harken points it at light control lines such as cunninghams, outhauls, vangs, traveler controls and barberhaulers, and it can also go into compact tackles.
Our take
At 0.5 oz with a 200 lb safe working load, the 224 is built for light control lines, not sheet loads. The ball bearings keep a 22 mm sheave turning freely, so it suits small tackles where you want little weight aloft or on the boom.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
