The Steiner Navigator is a 7x50 porro prism marine binocular with an open-bridge body for easier handling and a textured, rubber-armoured housing. It is sealed with pressurised dry nitrogen so it stays fogproof, and it is rated submersible to 5 metres. Each eyepiece is set once to your eyes, giving sharp images from 20 yards to infinity without refocusing. The strap floats and has reflective trim. Field of view is 419 ft at 1000 yds, and it weighs 26.6 oz.
Our take
The set-once eyepiece focus, sharp from 20 yards to infinity, means no fiddling when you swing from a buoy to a distant boat. The 5 m submersible rating and floating strap cover a drop overboard, though 26.6 oz gets noticeable over long watches.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
