The Steiner Navigator is a porro prism marine binocular with 7x magnification and 30 mm objective lenses, built in an open-bridge body with a textured grip. It uses multicoated optics and a floating prism mount with a silicone lens mounting to absorb shocks. It is rated submersible to 5 m and sealed with 14 psi dry nitrogen so it stays fogproof. Eyepieces are set once to your eyes for sharp images from 20 yards to infinity, and the yellow floating neckstrap has reflective trim. Weight is 17.6 oz.

Our take

The sport-auto focus system is set once per eye, so there is no focus wheel to chase when a buoy or boat is moving against the swell. With the 7x magnification and a strap that floats, it is a practical pick for tracking marks from a moving deck.

From our buying guide

Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.

Check before you buy:

  • The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
  • The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
  • A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
