The Navigator 7x30c is a Steiner marine binocular with 7x magnification and 30 mm objectives. It uses an open-bridge body meant to make handling on deck easier, and carries an integrated stabilised compass. Focus is set once and stays sharp from 20 m to infinity. The polycarbonate housing withstands impacts up to 11G, is water pressure proof to 5 m, and is nitrogen filled against internal fogging. It is rated from -20°C to +70°C, with a field of view of 419 ft at 1000 yards.
Our take
The fixed focus from 20 m to infinity means nothing to adjust while the boat is moving, and the 7x magnification suits a hand on a pitching deck. The nitrogen fill and 5 m pressure rating also cover wet, cold conditions.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
