The Nikon Prostaff P3 8x42 is a binocular with silver-coated roof prisms and eco-glass that is free of lead and arsenic. Its field of view is 125.2 m at 1000 m. The body has a reinforced polycarbonate chassis and a large centre focusing knob, is filled with nitrogen, and is described as waterproof and fogproof. It weighs 576 g.
Our take
The P3 8x42 gives a 125.2 m field of view at 1000 m at 8x, and its body is nitrogen filled and sealed as waterproof and fogproof. That pairing gives a broad view while the glass stays clear in damp air.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
