The PROSTAFF P3 10x42 is a roof prism binocular from Nikon with a closed-bridge body and a reinforced polycarbonate chassis. The prisms are silver coated and the optics are multicoated. The body is nitrogen filled and sealed against water and fogging, and focus is handled by a large centre knob. The field of view is 367 feet, and the binocular is 10x with 42mm objective lenses.
Our take
Nitrogen filling with waterproof, fogproof sealing keeps the inside of the tubes dry, so spray and damp air should not fog the view from within. The large centre focusing knob is a sizeable target to find and turn by feel.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
