The Nikon PROSTAFF P3 8x30 is a roof prism binocular with silver-coated prisms, a reinforced polycarbonate chassis and a large center focusing knob. Field of view is 456 ft at 1000 yd, or 151.4 m at 1000 m. It is nitrogen filled and water and fogproof, and it weighs 16.8 oz, or 476 g.
Our take
The 151.4 m field of view at 1000 m is wide, which makes finding a distant mark or buoy quicker on a moving boat. At 476 g, nitrogen filled and fogproof, it is easy to carry and keep ready.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
