This is Harken's 40 mm triple Carbo block, with a swivel head and a cam cleat built in. The body is long glass fiber injection molded and the whole block weighs 8.2 oz. It has a safe working load of 750 lbs and takes line up to 3/8 inch. The maker points it at main and jib sheets and control lines, and the head can be locked in either of two directions or left free to turn.
Our take
The built-in cam cleat on this 40 mm triple means a loaded control line can be held on the block itself, and the 750 lbs working load sets the ceiling. The swivel can be locked in two directions or left free, so you choose whether the lead floats.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
