This is Harken's 40 mm Carbo swivel block, built from fiber-reinforced composite. The bearings, sheave and side plates are all UV-stabilized, and the ball bearings keep the sheave turning. It is a light block aimed at main and jib sheets and at control lines, and the Carbo range is sized for dinghies and sportboats. The swivel head lets the block turn with the line.
Our take
Fiber-reinforced composite construction and UV-stabilized ball bearings define this 40 mm swivel block, which Harken points at main and jib sheets and control lines. The swivel head lets it turn with the line instead of sitting fixed in one direction.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
