This Harken Carbo block is a 40 mm double with a swivel head. It is made of fiber-reinforced composite, and the ball bearings, sheaves and side plates are all UV-stabilized. It weighs 3.2 oz. Safe working load is 970 lbs and the maximum line size is 3/8 inch. The head can be locked in either of two directions or left free to turn, and the maker lists the block for main and jib sheets and control lines.
Our take
A 3.2 oz weight against a 970 lbs safe working load comes from the fiber-reinforced composite body, and the UV-stabilized bearings and sheaves mean sun exposure has been allowed for. The swivel locks in two directions when you want the lead held.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
