From our buying guide
A wired sensor means a cable down the mast. A wireless one saves the cable, but puts a solar-charged battery aloft and needs a receiver below. Raymarine says working out true wind takes other sensors as well, such as boat speed and compass.
Check before you buy:
- The box has what connects it to your network, since not every masthead sensor plugs straight into an NMEA 2000 backbone.
- A wired sensor's cable reaches from the masthead to where it connects.
- You're happy looking after a wireless unit's battery. B&G recommends taking its WS320 down for winter and removing the battery.
