Size and grade do not fix the link, so a chain of the right size can still fail to fit a windlass. Maxwell says chain not matched to the chainwheel can jump off the gypsy or jam in the chain pipe.
Check before you buy:
- Your windlass maker's gypsy table lists your chain by its standard or label, since those labels aren't interchangeable.
- The pitch matches, which Maxwell calls the most important measurement for chainwheel fit.
- Working load limits are compared within one maker's table, and you've checked the design factor.
