The Vortex Diamondback HD 10x28 is a roof prism binocular with phase-coated BaK-4 prisms. The HD version has upgraded prisms and better resolution and color fidelity than the original Diamondback. It is waterproof and nitrogen purged. It weighs 13.5 oz, has a 273 ft field of view at 1000 yds and focuses as close as 6 ft.
Our take
Weighing 13.5 oz, the Diamondback HD 10x28 is light enough to keep close at hand, and the waterproof, nitrogen purged build copes with spray. The 273 ft field of view at 1000 yds is the sweep you get at 10x.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
