The Rule Gold Series 1500 GPH is a 12V, non-automatic submersible bilge pump with a 1-1/8 inch discharge outlet. It has a nylon and fiberglass impeller, anti-airlock protection, and it can run dry without burning out the motor. The pump has no float of its own, so it is switched by a separate float or a panel switch. The 1500 GPH figure is an open-flow rating: the tested output is about 83% of rated capacity when the discharge hose is raised above the pump.

Our take

The 1500 GPH rating is an open-flow figure, and with the discharge hose raised the tested output falls to about 83% of rated capacity. Expect less than the label in a real installation, and plan on a separate float or switch to start it.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
