The Rule Gold Series 2000 gph bilge pump runs on 12V and is non-automatic, so it needs a separate float or a panel switch to start. The outlet takes 1-1/8 in hose. The pump is completely submersible and tolerates dry running without motor burn-out. Lifted 6 ft above the pump, it delivers about 70% of its rating, and long runs of hose cut that further. The shaft is 5/16 in stainless steel. It carries a 5-year limited warranty.

Our take

At 6 ft above the pump this 2000 gph unit delivers about 70% of its rated output, so plan on well under 2000 gph in a real installation. It has no float of its own and needs a separate float or a panel switch to start, and it tolerates running dry.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
