The Rule 25DA is a submersible 12V bilge pump rated at 500 GPH, with a 3/4 inch outlet and a built-in check valve to stop water flowing back into the bilge. It is ignition protected and has a stainless-steel shaft, a thermal cell against overheating, and small vent holes under the strainer tabs to clear trapped air. It is a non-automatic pump, so it runs from a panel switch or a Rule float switch rather than starting itself. Rule reworked this series so it delivers its rated flow at 12 volts instead of needing 13.6 volts. It weighs 0.90 lb, and a 24V version is also made.
Our take
Rated flow at a true 12 volts means the 500 GPH figure doesn't depend on a charging system pushing 13.6 volts. The pump is non-automatic, so you must wire a float or panel switch, or it will sit idle while the bilge fills.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
