Manuals

The Rule 20DA is a submersible 12V bilge pump rated at 800 GPH. It has a 3/4 inch outflow port with a built-in check valve to stop water running back into the bilge, and a stainless-steel shaft. It is non-automatic, so it needs a panel switch or a Rule float switch to run. Small vent holes under the strainer tabs release trapped air to prevent airlocks, and a built-in thermal cell guards against overheating. The pump is ignition protected.

Our take

The 20DA reaches its 800 GPH rating at 12 volts instead of the 13.6 volts older versions needed, so the figure holds up on a battery that isn't being charged. It has no float of its own, so you must wire a float or panel switch for it to work.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
