This is the 121 lb (55 kg) size of the Rocna original anchor, a roll-bar and scoop design with a hot dip galvanized finish. Its sharp, chisel-like tip is made to cut into weed, grass and kelp, and the anchor is tempered 800 mPa high tensile steel. The roll bar turns the anchor to its setting attitude, and skid rails then angle the tip down. A lifetime warranty against breakage or deformation comes with it, and a slotted attachment point lets the head of a shackle pass. Size is picked from the maker's chart using vessel length and displacement.
Our take
The roll bar turns the 121 lb (55 kg) anchor to the right setting attitude however it lands, and skid rails then angle the tip down toward the bottom. Those two parts together are what get the sharp tip to bite into weed, grass or kelp.
From our buying guide
The Coast Guard does not regulate anchors, so no anchor carries its approval. Each maker sizes on its own assumptions, so a size on one chart does not translate to another.
Check before you buy:
- You know what wind the maker's chart assumes. Rocna's assumes 50 knots and Fortress's 30 knots.
- It fits your bow, since makers say some designs fit bow rollers, bow pulpits or bowsprits better.
- The type suits your bottom. A Coast Guard Auxiliary article says the right type depends a lot on your boat, your anchoring and the make-up of the bottom.
