The PROSTAFF P7 8x42 is a roof prism binocular from Nikon with antireflective lenses, dielectric prisms and an oil and water repellent coating on the glass. The body is a closed-bridge design on a reinforced polycarbonate chassis. It is nitrogen filled and sealed against water and fogging. The diopter locks so your setting is kept, and the field of view is 377 feet.
Our take
A 377 foot field of view at 8x shows a wide stretch of horizon in each look, and the locking diopter keeps your eye adjustment where you set it. The nitrogen-filled body is sealed against water and fog.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
