The Nikon Prostaff P7 8x30 is a binocular with a reinforced polycarbonate chassis and a large centre focusing knob. It gives a field of view of 151.4 m at 1000 m. The optics use antireflective lenses and dielectric prisms, and a locking diopter keeps your setting once it is made. The body is nitrogen filled, waterproof and fogproof, and weighs 485 g.
Our take
The P7 8x30 is nitrogen filled and listed as waterproof and fogproof, so spray and damp air on deck are within what it is built for. It weighs 485 g, and its locking diopter holds your focus setting once you have dialled it in.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
