The Nikon Monarch M5 8x42 is a roof prism binocular with ED glass and phase-corrected prism coatings. It has a central focus knob and focuses as close as 8.2 ft. Field of view is 335 ft at 1,000 yards, exit pupil is 5.3 mm and eye relief is 19.5 mm. It weighs 22.2 oz. The body is O-ring sealed and nitrogen filled against fogging.
Our take
The 335 ft field of view at 1,000 yards is the useful number here: on a moving deck, a wider view makes it easier to find a mark. The 5.3 mm exit pupil and 19.5 mm eye relief also keep it comfortable behind glasses.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
