The Nikon Monarch M5 12x42 is a roof prism binocular with ED glass lenses and phase-corrected prism coatings. It uses a central focus knob and focuses as close as 8.2 ft. Field of view is 267 ft at 1,000 yards and eye relief is 15.1 mm. It weighs 22.6 oz. The body is waterproof to 1 m for 10 minutes and nitrogen-purged against fogging.
Our take
Twelve-power magnification gives a 267 ft field of view at 1,000 yards, so you get a tight, magnified look at a distant mark or buoy. The 1 m, 10 minute waterproofing and nitrogen purge cover spray and fogging on deck.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
