The Nikon Monarch M5 10x42 is a roof prism binocular with ED glass and phase-corrected prism coatings. Objects appear ten times closer, and the central focus knob brings it down to 8.2 ft. Turn-and-slide rubber eyecups adjust for glasses or bare eyes. It is waterproof and fogproof, with a nitrogen-filled, O-ring sealed body, and it weighs 22.6 oz.
Our take
A 10x42 with a central focus knob that reaches down to 8.2 ft lets you read a close buoy and a far one without refitting your grip. Waterproof, fogproof, and nitrogen-filled, it is built for damp air and spray.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
