This is a single-trumpet air horn kit from Marinco with an electric compressor, finished in chrome-plated solid brass. The diaphragm is Lexan, which the maker describes as non-corroding, and the kit is supplied complete with the compressor and its plumbing parts. The horn is rated at 126 dB at one meter, measured in a 1/3 octave band, with a fundamental frequency of 630 Hz give or take 15. The compressor draws up to 20 amps at 12 volts. The maker says it meets ABYC and NMMA requirements for boats up to 20 meters (66 feet).
Our take
The 20 amp maximum draw at 12 volts is the number to plan the wiring around, because that is what the compressor can pull while it sounds. At 126 dB at one meter it gives a loud single note at 630 Hz, and the maker rates it for boats up to 66 feet.
From our buying guide
A boat of 12 m or more must have a whistle, and one of 20 m or more a bell as well. Under 12 m it need not carry them, but must have some other means of making an efficient sound signal.
Check before you buy:
- You aren't comparing loudness across makers, since they measure it at different distances, or give no distance at all.
- You can mount a fixed horn facing forward and as high as possible, as Kahlenberg says to.
- You have any parts the maker leaves to you, such as a horn button and fuse.
