The Mantus M1 is a stainless steel scoop-style anchor in the 17 lb size. It is formed from steel plate with no cast parts, and the shank and roll bar bolt to the fluke, so it breaks down for stowage. The shank is 2205 duplex stainless and the fluke is 316L, shot-peened then electro-polished. Mantus designed it to set in challenging bottoms such as very hard sand or dense grass.

Our take

The M1 bolts its shank and roll bar to the fluke, so this 17 lb anchor breaks down for stowage. The 2205 duplex shank and 316L fluke are shot-peened and electro-polished, which the maker ties to corrosion resistance.

From our buying guide

The Coast Guard does not regulate anchors, so no anchor carries its approval. Each maker sizes on its own assumptions, so a size on one chart does not translate to another.

Check before you buy:

  • You know what wind the maker's chart assumes. Rocna's assumes 50 knots and Fortress's 30 knots.
  • It fits your bow, since makers say some designs fit bow rollers, bow pulpits or bowsprits better.
  • The type suits your bottom. A Coast Guard Auxiliary article says the right type depends a lot on your boat, your anchoring and the make-up of the bottom.
