The Dometic 976 is a self-contained portable toilet with a 5 gallon (18.9 L) capacity, finished in grey. It runs on freshwater and flushes at the touch of a button, with no manual pumping and no batteries. The 9.8 L water tank has a level indicator and holds enough for 27 flushes. Emptying is done through a long pivoting spout on the bottom of the tank. It is moulded from high-strength ABS, weighs 14 pounds, and measures 15.25" deep, 13-2/16" wide and 15.25" high. The mounting bracket is sold separately.
Our take
The 27-flush water tank with a level indicator gives you a clear count of how far a trip's supply will stretch. Being self-contained on freshwater means no plumbing or through-hull work, but at 14 pounds you will carry it to empty it, and the bracket is extra.
From our buying guide
A vessel with installed toilet facilities must have an operable marine sanitation device that is labeled or certified. EPA says untreated sewage may not be discharged within three miles from shore, and in a No Discharge Zone treated sewage may not be either.
Check before you buy:
- You have what it needs, since heads may call for 12-volt power, through-hulls and seacocks, or a separate vacuum source.
- It fits the compartment, since Jabsco says an electric toilet needs more space at the rear than a manual one.
- If it could sit below the waterline, you'll fit a vented loop as the maker specifies, since Jabsco warns the vent, not the loop, is what stops the siphon.
