The Blue Sea Systems 9002e is a four-position battery selector switch that lets you run from one bank, another, or both combined. It is rated 350A continuous and 600A intermittent, with 3/8 inch tin-plated copper studs that take cables up to 4/0. It is ignition protected for gasoline powered boats and uses a make before break contact design. This version includes an Alternator Field Disconnect, which protects the alternator diodes if the switch is turned to OFF while the engine is running. Maximum voltage is 32V DC.
Our take
The built-in Alternator Field Disconnect is the useful part here: turning the knob to OFF with the engine running is an easy slip, and the AFD is there to protect the alternator diodes when it happens. The make before break contacts also keep the circuit closed while you change banks.
From our buying guide
Perko says its selector switches can be switched between 1, ALL and 2 with the engine running, and that they let you put batteries in parallel for emergency starting. Battle Born advises against that connection with its LiFePO4 batteries.
Check before you buy:
- Its continuous and 5-minute ratings suit your system. Perko rates its medium-duty 8501 at 250 A continuous.
- It has an alternator field disconnect if you need one. Perko says its AFD models protect non-unitized alternators if the switch is turned OFF with the engine running.
- If it's going in a gasoline engine space, the maker lists it as ignition protected.
