The Blue Sea Systems 5510e is an e-Series dual circuit battery switch with a single On/Off position. One switch controls two battery banks together while keeping them isolated from each other. It is rated at 350 amps continuous per circuit, with a 525 amp intermittent rating. The 3/8 inch tin-plated copper studs take multiple cables up to 4/0, the case is rated IP66, and it can be mounted on a surface or a rear panel. It is ignition protected for gasoline boats and has no alternator field disconnect.
Our take
The 350 amp continuous rating per circuit, with 525 amps intermittent, gives real headroom for heavy loads on each bank. Ignition protection means it can go on a gasoline boat, but with no alternator field disconnect, that feature is simply not part of this switch.
From our buying guide
Perko says its selector switches can be switched between 1, ALL and 2 with the engine running, and that they let you put batteries in parallel for emergency starting. Battle Born advises against that connection with its LiFePO4 batteries.
Check before you buy:
- Its continuous and 5-minute ratings suit your system. Perko rates its medium-duty 8501 at 250 A continuous.
- It has an alternator field disconnect if you need one. Perko says its AFD models protect non-unitized alternators if the switch is turned OFF with the engine running.
- If it's going in a gasoline engine space, the maker lists it as ignition protected.
