Manuals

The Whale Supersub Smart 650 is a 12 volt automatic bilge pump rated at 650 GPH with a 3/4 inch outlet. Switching is by electric field sensing and solid state, with no moving parts. It draws 3.4 A, is fused at 5 A and delivers 550 gph at a 3.3 ft head, with a maximum head of 9.8 ft. The pump draws down to 3/8 inch and has an integrated bleed ball to prevent airlocks.

Our take

The Supersub Smart switches on electric field sensing with no moving parts, and Whale says wave motion does not affect it. Flow falls from 650 gph open to 550 gph at a 3.3 ft head, so judge it against your real discharge height.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
