The Whale Supersub SS1212 is a 12V automatic bilge pump rated at 1100 gph. It has a low, narrow body measuring 8-3/8 inches long, 2-1/8 wide and 2-15/16 high, and the outlet turns between vertical and horizontal. The pump draws down to 3/8 inch, and a built-in non-return valve limits backflow. The automatic version senses water with a solid state switch that has no moving parts, a bleed ball helps avoid airlocks, and maximum head is 3 m (9.8 ft).
Our take
The solid state sensing switch has no moving parts, and it is described as unaffected by wave motion, so a slopping bilge should not make it chatter. A 3/8 inch draw down with a non-return valve also means little water is left behind.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
