The Whale Gusher Titan BP4402 is a hand-operated pump in the bulkhead version, with 1-1/2 inch hose connections. The body is glass-reinforced polypropylene. At 3 ft of lift it moves 18 GPM at 45 strokes a minute and 28 GPM at 70. At 6 ft the figures are 17 and 26 GPM. Maximum self-priming height and maximum head are both 13-1/2 ft. A spring assisted valve helps priming, and the clamp ring comes off for pump head rotation and maintenance.

Our take

Rated at 28 GPM at 70 strokes a minute with 3 ft of lift, the Titan moves a lot of water by hand, and the figure only falls to 26 GPM at 6 ft. The extra three feet of lift costs you just a gallon or two a minute.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
