The Whale Gusher 10 Mk3 is a manual pump for thru-deck or bulkhead mounting. It is self-priming and has a 1 1/2 inch hose connection, with a maximum head of 13-1/2 ft. It moves 17 GPM at 70 strokes per minute. The large valves are meant to resist blockage from stray debris, and all parts are easy to get at for maintenance. It can also move diesel, emptying a 54 gallon drum in under 4 minutes.
Our take
The extra large valves are meant to cut the chance of stray debris blocking the pump, and all parts can be reached quickly for maintenance. Those two details point at keeping the pump working when debris gets into it.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
