The Vortex Diamondback 8x32 is a roof prism binocular in green and black, with phase-corrected prisms and fully multi-coated optics. It is waterproof and fogproof, sealed with argon and O-rings, and wears a rubber armoured housing. Focusing is by the centre focus with a diopter adjustment. The field of view is 141.43 m at 1000 m, and the weight is 439 g.
Our take
The argon fill and O-ring seals make these binoculars waterproof and fogproof, so spray over the bow is something the housing is sealed against, and the rubber armour is there to take knocks on deck.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
