The Vortex Diamondback DB-206 is a 10x50 binocular with phase-corrected roof prisms and a 60 degree wide-angle view. It is water and fogproof, sealed with O-rings and filled with argon, and the housing is rubber armored. Field of view is 104.58 m at 1000 m and it weighs 839 g. Focus is by a centre wheel.
Our take
The 50 mm objectives bring a 10x50 size, and the weight shows it: 839 g is a lot to carry round the neck all day. The argon fill and O-ring sealing behind the water and fogproof rating mean the wet side of the job was designed in.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
