The Steiner Commander 7x50c is a marine binocular with 7x magnification and 50 mm objective lenses. It carries a built-in analogue compass with an integrated precision graticule, so bearings can be read while you look at a target. The body is waterproof to 10 m and filled with nitrogen to prevent fogging. Field of view is 140 m at 1000 m. An Open-Bridge design allows a one-handed grip, and it comes with a pouch, swim strap, neoprene strap and rain cover.

Our take

The nitrogen filling and 10 m waterproofing mean the Commander's optics should stay clear after spray and drenching, which matters when you are glassing from a wet cockpit. The built-in compass with graticule lets you take a bearing without reaching for a separate hand-bearing compass.

From our buying guide

Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.

Check before you buy:

  • The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
  • The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
  • A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
