The Steiner Commander 7x50 is a marine binocular with a 140 m field of view at 1000 m. Its nitrogen-filled body is built to resist internal fogging, and it is rated waterproof to 10 meters. The maker adds an Open-Bridge frame for one-handed handling, rubber armouring for grip, and eye caps that adjust three ways, including folded down for spectacle wearers.
Our take
The 140 m field of view at 1000 m gives a broad slice of horizon in each look, which makes finding a mark from a moving deck easier. With the nitrogen fill against fogging and a 10 m waterproof rating, spray should not be a worry.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
